«Perceiving, understanding and conceiving our sound identity, that of our places, its coherence and its idiosyncrasy is a necessary and healthy exercise. To capture and expose sounds means an extension of life and the creation of new spaces.»(escoitar.org; 2006)
The soundscape has been declared by UNESCO as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Therefore, its safeguarding, revitalization, regeneration and dissemination will be an important contribution to the regional and local culture.
Sonoteca Bahia Blanca is a virtual platform that aims to provide a common space for the collection, concentration, sharing and distribution of sound through its georeferencing and organization in a database, from a collaborative, supportive cultural practice and community status.
This project seek to enhance the sound heritage of the city, to rediscover and disseminate it, as a means of our identity.
We want to know the sounds of the city, let us listen to them!
Sonoteca Bahia Blanca invites citizens to participate in the construction of the Sound Map of the city. We understand it as a tool capable of giving us the opportunity to rediscover, understand and disseminate the cultural diversity of the city, participating from our own identity. Therefore, we invite the community to record sounds showing the local soundscape.
The next series of activities based on proposals by Raymond Murray Schafer Canadian composer and musician, on“Towards a sound education, 100 exercises hearing and sound production” (Arcana: 1992; 144 pps).
You need:
– Paper.
– Pencil.
– Ears wide open.
1) Write down all sounds you hear. You can take the time you want to perform this task.
Note:This simple exercise can be done anywhere by anyone. It would be interesting to repeat at different times and in contrasting environments, not only to develop the habit of listening, but also to compare each “postal sound”.
2) Now let’s group the sounds you registered in different ways:
We recommend:
a- Sound of nature, a sound produced by the human or technological sounds. Which one prevailed? Which is your favorite?
b- Some sounds continued incessantly during the listening; others perhaps were repeated, sounding more than once, while some were heard only once. Group them according to these characteristics.
c- Loud and softer sounds. Which ones prevailed? Which are your favourites?
d- Pleasant and unpleasant sounds. Which do you think predominate?
We tried to allow the access to the sound patrimony of the museum, through new interaction opportunities. The visitor can listen to the birds singing, through his mobile. He also can unload sounds and images, in order to have more information about these birds. This is easy, fast and free.
Teacher Andrea Mundiñano and her pupils from Cabildo Escuela de Educación Secundaria N°4, developed a Project called “Which town are you from?”. The objective is to promote the inmaterial patrimony of the town, and the sounds of the place. They recorded different sounds and created the Sound Map of Cabildo.

Who are we?
Sonoteca Bahia Blancareflects input from a community of individuals, mostly professionals and volunteers.
Noise pollution is a process that affects the environment, is produced by the presence of a physical agent called NOISE, in higher intensities than allowed normally and produces different effects on both humans and animals and materials.
Noise is unwanted sound annoying, especially abundant the urban environment or large areas of human activities.
The causes of noise in the community are many: air and ground transportation, construction work, industrial and commercial activities, recreation, mechanical and electrical equipment, pets, household noises like those produced by radio and television.
The noise has a number of features that unlike other air pollutants and impede the implementation of control and monitoring.
These features may be mentioned:
· Very little energy is required to produce it. The acoustic energy involved in generating high levels of noise is negligible.
· It is perceived by one sense. Unlike other pollutants, noise is perceived only through the sense of hearing, and that its spread is airborne. For example a polluted river could be detected through vision (visual impact), the taste, smell and even touch.
· No residue. Once the noise source fails, the noise disappears. This forces quantify their magnitude at the same time it occurs.
Compared with other pollutants, control of environmental noise is limited by lack of knowledge of its effects on humans, the limited information on the dose-response relationship and the lack of defined criteria.
Environmental legislation has provisions for local and provincial level.
In our city, the issue is addressed by Ordinance No. 7604/93: Noise nuisance to the neighborhood, which states:
«Cause is prohibited to produce or encourage unnecessary or excessive noises which spread by air or solid way affect or are able to affect the public, whether in public or private environments, whatever the jurisdiction on these runs and the act, fact or activity in question «
This Ordinance sets guidelines spare sound measurement based IRAM 4062.
Sonoteca Bahía Blancais an independent, self-managed and non-profit project. It is mainly sustained by a team of volunteers who develop research activities, design, programming, editing, classification, management and dissemination.
While it is contemplated the economic contribution caused by scholarships and grants, such income is wholly for both the development and updating of the platform and binding costs.
Our mission is completely pro bono and non-profit.
